DALAI LAMA

The fourteenth Dalai Lama The Dalai Lama is the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people. Since his escape from Tibet in 1959, he has been living in exile in India. From there he leads a nonviolent struggle for freedom and democracy in Tibet.

His most important message is the principle of nonviolence. The Dalai Lama is seen as the living manifestation of Chenrezig, the patron saint of Tibet and bodhisattva of compassion.

Because of his continuing emphasis on nonviolence and his strive for peace, the Dalai Lama has received many honorary doctorates and peace prizes. The most well-known is the Nobel Prize for Peace that he received on 10 December 1989.

The Dalai Lama looks for a peaceful and durable solution and sees dialogue as the only way to reach a mutually accepted solution.
